Kwarts Publishers, in collaboration with the Facebook-group Books & Everything recently donated the amount of R5844.90 to the World Literacy Foundation. The donation comes from the proceeds of the recently published Happy Holidays, an anthology of “fun, funny, or fulfilling short stories from all over the world.”

The idea for Happy Holidays, edited by “Books & Everything founder, Andrew Christie, and which includes diverse stories from fourteen authors, was not only to spread a little cheer over holidays but to raise funds for the fight against illiteracy in developing countries. Since it was founded in 2003, the World Literacy Foundation has run various literacy and educational projects worldwide. The organisation has allocated this donation to Sun Books – an initiative which provides solar-powered tablet devices to some of the world’s poorest schools in the Gulu region of Uganda, Africa. Sun Books’ primary goal is to eliminate illiteracy by bringing textbooks and educational resources to classrooms by providing them with the solar-powered tablet. This piece of technology is a sustainable solution in classrooms where there is no electricity, let alone access to the Internet. The wonderful thing about this tablet is that it provides a learner with quality textbooks and learning materials on a single device.

Jamie-Lee Kay, campaign manager of the World Literacy Foundation wrote a letter of thanks saying: 

"All your fundraising proceeds will help the World Literacy Foundation provide educational resources and materials to children in the Northern region of Uganda where there is the highest poverty rate and highest illiteracy rate in the country.

Most of the classrooms in this region are without basic learning materials, books, electricity or Internet. This year, we will be scaling up the project, and your donation will assist us in doing this."
