Size matters: Consider your print options

Book sizes

When it comes to printing a novel, but the independent author has to consider the various options with regards to the size of the printed version of the book.

The popular choice is A5 size (148 x 210 mm) which is the most cost effective option when printed locally with a digital printing process.

The standard 9" x 6" (152 x 229 mm) novel is only slightly taller than an A5 book, but the cost implication can be significant, as we can print two books from one A4-plus printer’s sheet, thus reducing the cost of the A5 when compared to the 9" x 6".

The smaller standard size of 8" x 5" (127 x 203) is also a very cost effective option. This is a good choice for novels of less than 300 pages. The advantage of using this size is that it will be suitable for upload to Amazon print-on-demand without having to adjust the layout.

In order to maximize your profits, it is crucial for you as an independent author to keep the unit price of your book as low as possible - without compromising on quality. If your book is already prepared in a 9" x 6" print-ready format, but you are looking for a more cost effective unit price, it may be possible to resize your print PDF and cover to a smaller size.
