News From Kwarts Publishers

The Adventures of Malawi, a debut novel by young author Tshiamo Noko

Kwarts Publishers recently had the privilege of helping the 13-year old Tshiamo to self-publish her first book, The Adventures of Malawi - Bizzaro Alliance: Squeaky but Sneaky! In between school, writing and all her other activities, she made some time to answer a few questions about herself and her writing.

Tell us a bit more about yourself. How old are you, where do you live, school, etc.?

I am 13 years old and live in Hartbeespoort Dam with my dad, mom, brother and aunty. I attend Pecanwood College.

When did you realise you want to become a writer?

I went to my first creative writing class at the age of ten. I was a lot of fun and I felt so free to write whatever was on my mind. It was very enjoyable!

In between school and other activities, how long did it take to write the book?

It took me about four weeks to write in the school holidays.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I like spending time with family and friends, playing violin and reading – A LOT!

What does your family and friends think of your writing?

My family and friends find my writing funny, relatable and original.

What type of books do you read? Please name a few favourite titles and authors:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo, and My Great Success and other Failures by Catherine Wilkins. I am also currently reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho; I find it quite interesting as it focuses on the aspect of finding your destiny.

Any suggestions to help aspiring child writers?

Write whatever you think the world needs to hear. Don’t let anyone discourage you and tell you that you’re too young.

What would you like to be when you grow up (if you can’t be a writer)?

I would be a lawyer, then later on start a pro bono firm that deals with cases where children and women are victims whom cannot afford good quality lawyer representation.

Are you currently writing a follow-up? Tell us a little more about the plot!

I am currently working on a sequel, but I think it’s best for everyone to wait and see …
