This book is written by Hans Kilian who worked for 20 years as a skipper in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and tells of the experiences he had on the sea and the people he met. At the same time it tells the story of the growth of the Waterfront and also, to a degree, the growth of South Africa.
Hans writes about how he came to be employed at the Waterfront, the experiences he had on the boats he skippered and the people who had a significant influence on his life. During his career as a skipper, he had a great many unique experiences – some good and others not so great.
These are the experiences related in the book, from the story about the Tokoloshe to the time he was “lost at sea and feared drowned.” Hans also describes participating in rescues with the NSRI and skippering charter boats and private motor yachts from the V&A over the past twenty years.
